Is a backlight for a 15 LCD monitors worth replacing ?

From what I've read...if you can do it yourself...do it. It's always cheaper to do it yourself...provided you can get the parts for a reasonable price.
As far as ditching the LCD and buying one on eBay...that's more of a judgment call. How much is your time worth to you?
You MAY be able to sell the old LCD on eBay..just as it is...someone will buy it to fix and resell...or use it for parts.
If you sell, as is...you may be able to recover some money that you will spend on the new one.
