Is a backlight for a 15 LCD monitors worth replacing ?

From what I've read...if you can do it yourself...do it. It's always cheaper to do it yourself...provided you can get the parts for a reasonable price.
As far as ditching the LCD and buying one on eBay...that's more of a judgment call. How much is your time worth to you?
You MAY be able to sell the old LCD on eBay..just as it is...someone will buy it to fix and resell...or use it for parts.
If you sell, as is...you may be able to recover some money that you will spend on the new one.

yes, you can use your monitor as a tv without the cpu connection by installing it to the averkey media there is a model with a tuner w/ cable i think it cost arouund a$120 for this gadget

If ur using vista, right click any where on the desktop, not on an icon and go to personalize, xp its called display, go to display settings, then there should be 2 boxes, click on the one with the 2 on it and check the box that says extend my desktop to this monitor. Then hit apply, after that you can change the screen resolution or move it around. After you do this you will be able to move the mouse off the laptop screen and it will be on the extra monitor. If you want to use it as ur main monitor just click the drop down box and select it.

Hopefully gone.
By then, I'm sure either SED or OLED will have overtaken LCD as the display of choice. If LCDs are still around, they will almost undoubtedly all be RGB-LED backlit. Who knows, maybe someone will bring the CRT back and it'll blow everything else away.
